The
Basques have lived in this area since prehistoric
times; creating settlements that have grown over the centuries,
spreading from the rugged coastline, along the Pyrenees,
through the valleys, to the inland plains.
Travellers will encounter a diversity
not only in architecture but also in long-standing traditions
and local cultures. |

Each of the
cities in the Basque Country has also got its own personality:
Bilbao
- Bilbo. A 700 hundred year old city that is vigorously
moving into the future, reinventing itself from its industrial
past thanks to the first building of the 21st century:
the Guggenheim Museum.
Vitoria
- Gasteiz. This city which has won awards for its
town planning is the capital of the Basque Country and
still preserves the charm of its medieval origins.
San
Sebastián - Donostia. A graceful and dynamic
city that has been a summer resort for kings, queens and
nobility from all over Europe since 1845, and is still
a destination for those choosing quality and charm. |

 |
| An ideal destination
for those who enjoy peace and quiet or for those who want
to immerse themselves in local events and celebrations.
As it is really the people who make all these places special,
in the smallest town or in any city you will find that
visitors are made welcome. Because, as the Basques like
to say: our doors are open but our hearts are even more
so. |
